Several teams throughout baseball history have been known as the Montgomery Rebels, but perhaps the best known is the club that played in the Southern League. They began play in the league in 1965 as a Detroit Tigers farm club. The Rebels hovered around .500 for their first several seasons but went on to become the league's dominant team in the 1970s, winning championships in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, and 1977. However, after the 1980 season, the club relocated to Birmingham and became known as the Birmingham Barons.
