San Diego is located in southwestern California, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, 15 miles north of the Mexican border and the city of Tijuana, Baja California. It was founded on July 16, 1759 as San Diego de Alcala by Padre (Father) Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary, hence the name "Padres" associated with the city's teams.
