Don Welke

Biographical Information[edit]

Don Welke scouted for over 40 years.

Welke was an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, then was head coach at Concordia Lutheran Junior College from 1970-1975. He was a part-time scout for the Cincinnati Reds (1965-1969), Kansas City Royals (1970-1976), before going full time with the Toronto Blue Jays (1977-1995), Baltimore Orioles (1996-1999) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1999-2004). He was also head coach of Concordia University from 1970-1975. He was in the Texas Rangers scouting department in 2005 then was a special assistant to Philadelphia Phillies GM Pat Gillick in 2006. Welke rejoined the Rangers as Senior Special Assistant to the General Manager, Scouting, at the end of 2006. He signed Jorge Alfaro, Willie Blair, Fabio Castillo, Pat Hentgen and Martin Perez among many others. As an advance scout, he helped the Blue Jays prepare the 1992 World Series and 1993 World Series. He was also advance scout for Team USA when they won the 2000 Olympics.

His final assignment was as Vice-President responsible for scouting for the San Diego Padres, having joined the team in 2014.
