Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Cole Phillips was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft out of a high school in Texas. He was signed on July 21st, but he never got to pitch in the Braves' system, however. He was assigned to the FCL Braves, but never took the mound for them then underwent Tommy John surgery, missing all of 2023 as well.
On December 3, 2023, he was included in a big major league trade, going to the Seattle Mariners along with former supplemental first rounder Jackson Kowar in return for OF Jarred Kelenic, P Marco Gonzales and 1B Evan White. Gonzales and White had both failed to produce up to their large contracts, so the M's could not ask for much in return for Kelenic, who actually had some value, getting a reclamation project in Kowar. For his part, Phillips was basically a lottery ticket, as no one knew how he would fare once he was ready to begin his professional career.
