Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Cody Poteet was a winner in his major league debut, which took place on May 12, 2021 for the Miami Marlins against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings. The Marlins had drafted him in the 4th round of the 2015 amateur draft, out of UCLA. In 2012, coming out of high school, he had been drafted in in the 27th round by the Washington Nationals but decided to attend college instead of signing with them. He was actually more of a position player in high school, when he batted .509 in his senior year but pitched just 17 2/3 innings, but transitioned to being a full-time pitcher in college.

Poteet went 2-3, 4.99 in 7 starts for Miami in his first season, then followed that in 2022 by going 0-1, 3.86 in 12 games, but just 2 starts. He had totaled 30 2/3 innings his first season, and 28 the second. He was then injured for most of 2023, making just one appearance for the Omaha Storm Chasers, the AAA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals before signing a free agent contract with the New York Yankees in early 2024. He again spent most of that season in the minors, making 13 starts between AA and AAA, but also pitched five times in the minors, spread out over three different stints in the Show. In those 5 games, 4 of which were starts, he went 3-0, 2.22 while logging 24 1/3 innings. However, for anyone thinking he was about to burst out as a future ace, he was already 29 by then and his minor league record had been patchy at best. It was therefore a big surprise when he was the sole return obtained by the Chicago Cubs when they traded OF/1B Cody Bellinger to the Yankees on December 17th; the Cubs even threw in a considerable sum of money in the deal to cover some of Bellinger's salary over the two coming years.
