Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Corey Black has played in the minors.
Black hit .431 as a high school senior. As a college freshman, he was just 2 for 19 with two walks; he also pitched, going 2-2 with 2 saves and a 7.04 ERA. Focusing on his mound work, he had a 4-5, 3.56 record as a sophomore, fanning 78 but walking 42 in 73 1/3 IP. Transferring down to NAIA Faulkner, he dazzled at 11-2, 1.53 with a .173 opponent average and 96 K in 88 IP. He was the second NAIA player picked in the 2012 draft, following catcher Dane Phillips. He was a 4th-round choice of the New York Yankees in the 2012 amateur draft. Barely a year later, on July 26, 2013, he was traded straight-up to the Chicago Cubs in return for slugging outfielder Alfonso Soriano. In the deal the Yankees also agreed to take on $6.8 million of the $24.5 million left on Soriano's contract.
Black began his professional career with the GCL Yankees in 2012, then was promoted to the Staten Island Yankees after only one game and ended the season with Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League. Between the three stops, he went 2-2, 3.08 in 12 games as a starter, pitching 52 2/3 innings and striking out 50 against 15 walks. He was assigned to the Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League to start 2013 and had gone 3-8, 4.25 in 19 starts when he was traded to the Cubs.
