Biographical Information[edit]
James Needy is a pitching prospect in the San Diego Padres organization.
He was selected by the Padres in the 6th round of the 2009 amateur draft out of a nearby high school ans signed quickly, making his debut with the AZL Padres that season and going 1-1, 2.65 in 5 games. He then missed the entire 2010 season because of an injury, coming back in 2011 with the AZL Padres again. after two games, he was promoted to the Eugene Emeralds, ending the year at 3-4, 4.25 in 14 games. He then spent the bulk of the 2012 season with the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League where he was 6-3 with a sparkling 1.75 ERA working mainly as a long reliever and occasional starter. He was impressive enough to get quick looks in both AA and AAA that year.
In 2013, the Padres had him back starting full time in Class A, with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. In 27 starts, he went 10-5, 3.76, pitching 134 innings. He was promoted to the AA San Antonio Missions in 2014 and continued to do well as a starter there. On July 30th, he retired the first 16 batters he faced before allowed what was initially ruled an infield single, then kept pitching flawlessly until the end of the 7th, at which point relievers Frank Garces and R.J. Alvarez added a hitless inning each to complete the 6-0 win. After the game, the official scorer looked at the 6th inning play again and decided it should be ruled an error by shortstop Diego Goris, turning the game into a combined no-hitter.
