Biographical information[edit]
R.J. Alvarez was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 3rd round of the 2012 amateur draft.
On July 21, 2014, Alvarez was traded along with Taylor Lindsey, Jose Rondon and Elliot Morris from the Angels to the San Diego Padres for Huston Street and Trevor Gott. On July 30th, he pitched the final inning of a 6-0 win by the San Antonio Missions of the AA Texas League over the Corpus Christi Hooks, retiring all three batters in order. At the time, he thought he had put the icing on a one-hitter, but after the game, the official scorer changed his call on a 6th-inning grounder, turning the Hooks' lone hit into an error, and R.J. had a combined no-hitter with starter James Needy and set-up man Frank Garces.
He made his major league debut with the Padres that September, pitching 10 times with no record and a 1.13 ERA. On December 18th, he was involved in a second major trade in less than six months, heading to the Oakland Athletics, along with fellow pitcher Jesse Hahn, in return for catcher Derek Norris and pitcher Seth Streich. His tenure with Oakland was a tad bit rougher, with a 9.90 ERA in 21 appearances.
After not playing in the major leagues from 2016 to 2021, he returned to a big league mound in 2022 with the New York Mets. He mostly played at Triple-A in the interim. he appeared in just 1 game with the Mets, on August 16th, pitching 2 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves. He replaced starting pitcher Taijuan Walker who had to leave after two innings, with the game still scoreless, but allowed 3 runs in 2 1/3 innings to be charged with the 5-0 loss. It was the first decision of his major league career.
