Biographical Information

Milt Smith was originally with the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro American League in 1950. In 1952 his first year in the minor leagues he was with the Lewiston Broncs of the class A Western International League where he led the league in runs scored with 126 and had 12 homers to go with a.318 batting average. In a split season with the Salem Senators (56 games) and the San Diego Padres (55 games) in 1953, Milt hit 10 homers and had a .341 batting average.

The third baseman spent most of the rest of the decade in AAA with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Rainiers, Sacramento Solons, Omaha Cardinals and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Milt was hitting .338 in the Pacific Coast League for San Diego in 1955 when he was acquired by the Cincinnati Redlegs. However, he hit just .196 in 36 games for the Redlegs in his only chance in the show.

Milt was in pro baseball for 10 seasons (1952-1961) and with the exception of his short stay with Cincinnati in 1955, he was a journeyman minor leaguer. Smith appeared in 1299 games, hit 79 homers and had a career batting average of .290. Smith died April 11, 1997, at age 68 in Cincinnati, OH.
