Biographical Information[edit]

"I couldn't do anything wrong". - Regalado, talking about his marvelous 1954 spring training in which he hit 11 homers and batted .447, getting a chance to play while Bobby Avila was holding out

The only major league player given both the first and last names of movie star "Rudolph Valentino", Rudy Regalado played three years in the majors in the 1950's.

Regalado grew up in the Los Angeles area and played college ball at the University of Southern California. With USC, he played in the 1949 College World Series. After college and a stint in the National Guard during the Korean War, he was signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1953. After spending that year in the minors, his impressive Spring Training performance in 1954 earned him a spot with Cleveland. In 65 games that year, primarily as a backup to third baseman Al Rosen, he hit .250 with a pair of home runs. He went 1-for-3 in the 1954 World Series as the Indians fell to the New York Giants.

Regalado played parts of two more years in the majors and continued to play in the minors through 1960.

Regalado's nephew Sam Regalado, a professor at Cal State Stanislaus, is an expert on the role of baseball in American culture who has written a book on the subject and appeared in television documentaries.
