Biographical Information[edit]

Frank Alfano was twice named the top second baseman in a College World Series. Alfano was taken by the New York Mets in the 46th round of the 1967 amateur draft out of high school but did not sign. Going on to USC, he had the winning hit in the 15th inning of the 1970 College World Series finale, to beat Florida State University in a game for the history books. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at second base for heroics, but the Most Outstanding Player honor went to Gene Ammann of the losing FSU squad. USC repeated as winners in the 1971 College World Series and Alfano again was the All-Tournament choice at second. Undrafted out of college, Alfano played in 1972 for two Minnesota Twins affiliates. He hit .208/.311/.277 in 51 games and fielded .974 at second base for the Lynchburg Twins and was 4 for 24 with four walks for the Wisconsin Rapids Twins.

He later was a fire captain for the San Diego fire department and was a NCAA and NAIA umpire.
