Biographical Information

Dave Engle only spent two years as a regular in the major leagues. He was the Minnesota Twins starting catcher in 1983, when he hit .305, and 1984, when he was an All-Star. He was a quasi-regular as an outfielder as a rookie in 1981, playing 82 games with a .258 average in the strike-shortened season. He was converted to catcher after hitting poorly and losing his job at the start of the 1982 season.

He spent the remainder of his career, from 1985 to 1989 as a utility player filling in as a pinch hitter, emergency catcher, outfielder and corner infielder with the Twins, Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos and Milwaukee Brewers. He hit a home run as a pinch hitter in his first at bat as a member of the Expos in 1987, and briefly was the team's starting left fielder in the absence of Tim Raines, who was unsigned because of collusion, but he could not hit enough to hold the job.

After his playing days ended, he was a Houston Astros coach in 1998 and a member of the New York Mets staff in 2001 and 2002. Engle was a coach for the Tucson Toros in 1991-1994. He managed the Kissimmee Cobras in 1995, Jackson (MS) Generals in 1996, the Capital City Bombers in 1999 and the St. Lucie Mets in 2000.

By 2008, Engle was a professional scout for the Baltimore Orioles.

Engle is the brother-in-law of former Twins teammate Tom Brunansky. His father, Roy Engle, was the high school catcher for Ted Williams, played a year of minor league ball, and was later a college and high school coach [1]. As seniors at Hoover High School, Roy Engle was the captain and batted third, while Williams batted fourth. Roy worked at the Ted Williams summer camps.
