Biographical Information[edit]

Sean Rees was a minor league pitcher.

Rees was 13-3 with a 2.67 ERA for ASU in 1990, striking out 162 and allowing only 98 hits in 138 IP. He was second in the Pac-10 Conference in ERA behind Randy Powers and joined Powers and Stan Spencer as the All-Conference pitchers Mike Mussina was among those they beat out. He tied for 11th in NCAA Division I in wins and fourth in strikeouts, behind Steve Wolf, Mike Zimmerman and Dave Fleming. Baseball America named him as an All-American, joining Kirk Dressendorfer, Oscar Munoz, Dan Smith and Spencer in being picked. The American Baseball Coaches Association passed him by, going with Aaron Sele and Phil Stidham alongside Smith and Spencer. He pitched one game for Team USA that summer but did not join them for the 1990 Baseball World Cup. Sean slumped as a junior, though he still tied for 18th in Division I with 128 K. The Seattle Mariners took him in the 5th round of the 1991 amateur draft, one pick before Ozzie Timmons.

Rees was 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA for the '91 San Bernardino Spirit. In 1992, he posted a 10-12, 4.02 record for the Peninsula Pilots. The team won the Carolina League pennant. Rees tied for 10th in the loop in wins but tied Ben Burlingame, Allen Plaster and Kevin Ryan for the loss lead and led in balks (BR Minors lists 15; the 1993 Baseball Almanac lists 13). He opened 1993 poorly with the Riverside Pilots (0-1, Sv, 6.19 in 18 G, 52 H in 32 IP) and moved to the Houston Astros system, going 3-3 with a 5.19 ERA for the Quad Cities River Bandits. He resurfaced briefly for the 1996 Palm Springs Suns (1-0, 3 R in 9 IP). He finished his minor league career 17-19 with a 4.24 ERA in 72 games (50 starts). In 309 2/3 IP, he allowed 326 hits and 109 walks while striking out 253.

Rees was later pitching coach at Palomar College.
