Biographical Information[edit]
Dan Smith pitched for the Texas Rangers in 1992 and 1994. His teammates included Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, Will Clark, Rafael Palmeiro, Nolan Ryan, Jose Canseco, and Julio Franco.
Smith played for Team USA when they went 1-5 in the 1989 Intercontinental Cup despite a staff including Smith, Dave Fleming, Brian Williams and Chris Haney.
A first-round pick in the 1990 amateur draft out of Creighton University, Smith pitched in the minors from 1990-2000, primarily as a starter. His best season was 1992, when he went 11-7, 2.52 with 122 strikeouts in 146 innings for the Tulsa Drillers. He was named Texas League Pitcher of the year that year and made his Major League debut that September.
He is not to be confused with another pitcher named Dan Smith, who also came up through the Rangers' organization in the 1990s and made his Major League debut in 1999.
