Biographical Information

Trevor Williams was a winner his his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 7, 2016. Coming in relief of Jameson Taillon, he pitched three innings against the St. Louis Cardinals, giving up one unearned runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 3, and received credit for his team's 4-3 win.

Williams wore number 57 in 2016 and during his first full season in 2017, when he was 7-9, 4.07 in 31 games. In 2018, however, he switched to number 34 in honor of Cory Hahn, his former roommate at Arizona State University who was left paralyzed after an on-field accident in his freshman season in 2011. He had a decent first half in 2018, going 7-7, 4.36 in 19 starts, and then suddenly became of the toughest pitchers in the majors during the second half. In his first 10 starts after the All-Star break, he went 6-2, 1.19. On July 23rd, he pitched the first complete game and shutout of his career when he defeated the Cleveland Indians, 7-0. On September 16th, he pitched 6 scoreless innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, as the Bucs won, 3-2, over a Brewers team working furiously to ensure a postseason bid. He did again on September 22nd, blanking the Brewers for 6 innings before turning the ball over the bullpen, to earn his 14th win by a 3-0 score. He ended the year at 14-10, 3.11 in 31 starts.

He was never able to recapture the brilliance of his 2018 season in subsequent years, as the Pirates tumbled down the standings. In 2019, he went 7-9, 5.38 in 26 starts, and in 2020 - the season that was shortened to 60 games by the Coronavirus pandemic - he was 2-8, 6.18 in 11 games for what was now a last-place team. He became a free agent after the season and signed with the Chicago Cubs, where he integrated the starting rotation of a pennant contender in 2021. Things did not go great, as he was 4-2, 5.06 in 13 games - 11 starts - over the first four months. He was then swept up the fire sale that saw the Cubs unload a pile of veterans at the trading deadline. In his case, he joined SS Javier Baez in heading to the New York Mets on July 30th, in return for OF prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong.
