Stewart Smothers peaked at AAA then became a scout.
Smothers was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 19th round of the 1997 amateur draft. He hit .275/.337/.399 with 6 triples and 12 steals in 16 tries that summer for the Eugene Emeralds and had 9 outfield assists (two shy of league leader Efrain Alamo). He tied for second in the Northwest League in triples, one behind Cash Riley. In 1998, he hit only .204/.273/.302 for the Macon Braves yet scored 61 runs and drove in 60. He had 17 steals in 29 tries, 14 assists but 12 errors and 8 sacrifice flies. He tied Matt Berger for 5th in the South Atlantic League in sac flies while tying Toby Rumfield for the most in the Braves chain. He led SAL outfielders in putouts (314), was two errors behind leader Aaron Brooks and was three assists shy of co-leaders Jason Fitzgerald and Brandon O'Hearn. His 145 whiffs were 4th in the Atlanta system.
In 1999, he cut his error total to five in a season split between Macon (.283/.325/.434 in 63 G) and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (.151/.210/.243 in 56 G, 71 K in 185 AB). He led Atlanta minor leaguers with 10 sacrifice flies, tied for 10th in all of minor league ball. He spent 2010 with Myrtle Beach (7 for 24, 2B, HR), the Greenville Braves (.222/.347/.361 in 57 G) and the Richmond Braves (1 for 18, BB, 9 K), stealing 7 bases in 7 tries. In 2001, he hit .233/.313/.294 in 39 games for Greenville, backing up Junior Brignac in center field. In 2002, he played for Greenville (.149/.299/.230 in 29 G) and Richmond (4 for 18, 3 BB). He ended his career with a .220/.294/.328 batting line in 475 games. He had 197 runs, 168 RBI and 41 steals in 67 tries. He fielded .970 and had 45 assists.
Smothers later was a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees. His signees included Nik Turley.
