Biographical Information[edit]

Adam Virchis pitched as high as AAA (briefly) then became a scout.

Virchis was 6-5 with a save and a 3.38 ERA in 1995, his senior year at San Diego State; he was 5th in the Western Athletic Conference in ERA. The Chicago White Sox took him in the 8th round of the 1995 amateur draft, one pick after Ray King. Virchis was not as sharp in his pro debut with the Bristol White Sox at 0-7, 5.30, though he only walked 7 in 56 innings. He tied for third in the Appalachian League in losses; oddly, four of the five players he tied with would go on to the majors: Jimmy Osting, Willie Martinez, Lance Davis and Jose Jimenez.

As a reliever primarily for the 1996 Hickory Crawdads, Adam improved to 8-6, 3.27. He split 1997 between Hickory (2-3, Sv, 3.86 in 15 G) and the Winston-Salem Warthogs (3-7, 4.78 in 14 G). He was 5th in the White Sox chain in losses. He had better success with the same clubs in 1998: 1-3, 3.38, Sv in 9 G for Hickory and 5-6, 3.39 for the Warthogs. He ended his playing career in 1999, appearing for the Warthogs (3-5, Sv, 4.73 in 33 G), Birmingham Barons (0 R in 3 IP) and Charlotte Knights (1 R in 6 1/3 IP).

Overall, Adam had gone 22-37 with three saves and a 4.01 ERA in 133 minor league games (44 starts). In 451 innings, he allowed 462 hits (50 home runs) and 121 walks while striking out 307.

Virchis then scouted for the White Sox. He signed or helped sign Aaron Cunningham, Stefan Gartrell, Erik Johnson, Justin Kuehn, Donny Lucy, Leighton Pangilinan, Aaron Poreda and Scott Snodgress.
