Biographical Information[edit]
José Jimenez pitched a no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 25, 1999 in Arizona facing Randy Johnson. Pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals, Jimenez won 1-0, and then, two starts later, again shut out Johnson and the Diamondbacks in a 1-0 game, this time pitching a two-hitter on July 5th. But he went 5-14 overall on the year and was switched to the bullpen after being traded to the Colorado Rockies after the season. In between his two shutouts, he made a start against the Houston Astros in which he gave up 7 runs in 4 1/3 innings. He pitched four seasons as the Rockies' closer from 2000 to 2003, peaking with a career-high of 41 saves in 2002, racking up 102 saves overall.
He signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians for the 2004 season but was shelled: he saved 8 games, but also posted a 1-7 record and a dreadful 8.42 ERA, thanks to 45 hits - 6 of them home runs - and 15 walks allowed in 36 1/3 innings over 31 appearances. He did not return to the big leagues. He did pop up again three years later, after testing positive for a banned substance shortly before he was slated to compete for the Dominican national team in the 2007 Pan American Games.
His son, Trey, is a YouTube star known by the handle AlphaCommander.
