Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Tyler Thomas was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 7th round of the 2017 amateur draft out of Fresno State University where he was a regular starter and a member of the USA College National Team. He began his professional career in 2017 with the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, going 1-0, 2.33 in 11 games, all in relief.
In 2018, he started the year with the South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League, going 3-5, 2.88 in 15 games (14 starts). On July 19th, he was traded to the Texas Rangers in return for veteran P Jesse Chavez. He then pitched for two more teams, the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League and the Down East Wood Ducks of the Carolina League. His combined record was 3-9, 3.00 in 22 games. His 2019 season was then almost completely lost to an arm injury, as he made only two starts in April with the Wood Ducks before being shut down. He did not appear in another pro game until 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic intervened to wipe out the 2020 minor league season. When he returned, he was used strictly as a reliever with three teams, making it all the way to AAA, and going 3-3, 3.66 in 33 games. In 2022, he pitched another 22 games in relief between the AA Frisco RoughRiders and Round Rock Express, going 2-1, 6.14. That season ended on August 16th when the Rangers handed him his release.
In 2023, he first signed with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the independent Atlantic League, going 2-1, 0.90 in 15 games. On June 6th, he was signed by the New York Mets, and then finished the season by pitching for the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies and AAA Syracuse Mets, going a combined 2-0, 2.86 in 24 games, with 4 saves. On December 6th, he was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the minor league portion of the 2023 Rule V Draft, then two days later was packaged with another recent acquisition, 1B Evan White, in a trade to the Los Angeles Angels in return for major leaguers David Fletcher and Max Stassi.
