Biographical Information[edit]
Harry Raymond played five years in the majors. Most of his games were with the Louisville Colonels, from 1888 to 1891. While he pitched and won a game in 1889, mostly he played third base. He is listed as the regular third baseman for the Colonels in 1889 and 1890.
One site [1] chose his pitching performance as the second best all-time pitching performance by a non-pitcher. However, another site [2] has pointed out that Raymond, while allowing only one earned run, permitted 19 baserunners, which for a long time was the record for most baserunners for one earned run allowed.
SABR wrote an article [3] about the 1889-1890 Colonels, the first-ever team to go from finishing last in the league to finishing first. Things were bad enough for the 1889 team that Raymond and a group of other players engaged in the first ever strike, which got quite a bit of press attention [4].
Harry's pro career went from 1887 to 1899.
Through 2019, he is the only major leaguer born in Sauquoit, NY.
