Biographical Information[edit]
Charlie Newman, the first major leaguer born in Juda, Wisconsin, came to the majors a few years after another early Wisconsonian, Lave Cross. Newman died in 1947 in California, the same year that Hal Chase also died in there
He broke in with the 1892 New York Giants, playing left field and hitting .333 in three games. Pitcher Amos Rusie also played four games in the outfield that year for the Giants.
Newman also played 16 games in left field for the 1892 Chicago Colts, where Walt Wilmot was the regular left fielder. Since Wilmot hit .216, there was an opportunity, but Newman hit .164 on a team that hit .235. The next year Wilmot kept the job and hit .301.
