Biographical Information[edit]
Darold Satchell pitched in the minor leagues before turning to umpiring. He played from 1953 to 1958, his best season coming in 1955 when he was 6-3, 2.85 for the Paducah Chiefs of the Kitty League, leading the circuit in ERA.
He started his umpiring career in 1965 in the Western Carolinas League, then worked in the Carolina League in 1966-1967, the Eastern League in 1968, and the International League from 1969 to 1971. On October 3, 1970, he was part of a crew of fill-in umpires who worked Game 1 of the 1970 ALCS because the regular umpires were on strike; he was at second base for that game between the Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles played at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, MN. The regular umpires then returned for the next two games.
