The son of David González Sr., brother of Adrian Gonzalez and David González Jr., infielder Edgar Gonzalez was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 30th round of the 2000 amateur draft. Edgar and his brother were among the Mexican-Americans playing for Mexico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic; he was 3 for 11 with two steals, two runs and 3 RBI while splitting second base duties with Freddy Sandoval. He struggled defensively, making at least two run-scoring errors in three games.
Signing with the Yomiuri Giants for 2010, he went 1 for 3 with a walk in his Nippon Pro Baseball debut, playing second and hitting sixth on Opening Day.
He managed Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, helping them win a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He remained their manager for the Classic.
Gonzalez became a manager with the GCL Yankees East in 2018.
