The Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award
(Redirected from The Sporting News Rookie Player of the Year Award)
The The Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award was first given out by The Sporting News in 1946.
The award has been given out in a variety of fashions over the years. In 1947, 1948 and 1950, a single award was given for all of Major League Baseball. From 1949 to 1962, a single player from each league has been given the award in most years, with there being three winners (two NL) in 1957 and four winners (two from each league) in both 1958 and 1961.
In 1963, the award was split into two awards: The Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year and The Sporting News Rookie Player of the Year. Each award was given to a single player in each league. In 2004, the two award system was discontinued and a single award for each league was reimplemented.
