Biographical Information[edit]

Baseball is watching your husband sing "Happy Birthday" to Charlie Finley's mule." — Merrill Thorne (aka Mrs. Jim Nash)

Big Jim Nash had some effective years with the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics in the 1960s. The righthander was traded to the Atlanta Braves and then to the Philadelphia Phillies. Nash finished his career in 1972 at 68-64 with a 3.58 ERA.

He made a notable splash going 12-1 as a rookie for the Kansas City Athletics in 1966, a team which finished under .500. If he had had enough innings to qualify for the championship, he would have been second in the American League in ERA. By winning his first 7 career decisions, he set a franchise record for the Athletics which still stands.

The following year, 1967, he went 12-17 on a team that also featured the rookie Reggie Jackson; he struck 186 batters that year, good for 9th in the AL. In 1968, when he went 13-13 with a 2.28 ERA, his ERA was seventh best in the league.

After he went 8-8 in 1969, he was traded for Felipe Alou and went 13-9 for the Atlanta Braves in 1970, a team which finished under .500.

Nash had started his minor league career going 14-6 for the Burlington Bees in 1964, then 14-5 for the Lewiston Broncs in 1965, and 7-4 in a partial season for the Mobile A's in 1966.
