Biographical Information

Bob Owchinko pitched ten years in the majors, first as a starter and then as a reliever.

He was a teammate of Dave Winfield and Ozzie Smith with the San Diego Padres, a teammate of Rickey Henderson on the Oakland Athletics of 1981 who won their division and the division series that year, and he was a reliever on the Cincinnati Reds in 1984 when Pete Rose became the player-manager.

He helped Team USA win the Silver Medal in the 1975 Pan American Games, leading the event with 3 wins and 28 strikeouts. In the 1976 College World Series, Eastern Michigan University was matched up in a game against Arizona State University. Owchinko, who had been drafted in the first round by the San Diego Padres, faced Floyd Bannister, who had been drafted first overall by the Houston Astros. In 1990, Owchinko played for the San Bernardino Pride of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He pitched in 4 games and had one save with a 4.50 ERA before the league folded.
