Georgia-Florida League

From BR Bullpen

The class D Georgia-Florida League ran from 1935 through 1958, with a break from 1943-45 due to World War II. When the league formation was discussed in late 1934, the plan was for a FLAG League, with teams in Troy, AL and Dothan, AL rounding out an eight team circuit. Ultimately a six team Georgia-Florida league was formed with Troy and Dothan ending up in the Alabama-Florida League the next year. A league known for relatively low scoring levels, the league witnessed an amazing one home run by the entire Cordele A's club in 1952. That season the league also featured a future governor, Mario Cuomo. Unlike most minor leagues that died off in the 1950s, a revival was attempted in 1962 as a four-team class D circuit. The D level was eliminated in 1963, when the minor league system was restructured, and the Georgia-Florida League became a Class A League. It collapsed once more and 1963 was the final season for the league. One of the stronger class D leagues, most teams in the Georgia-Florida League were affiliated with major league clubs. When Tallahassee, FL dropped out in 1950, there was no Florida representation for the rest of the league's existence.
