Biographical Information

Georgia native Woody Davis spent seven active seasons in professional baseball from 1934 to 1940.

Woody spent two games in the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers from May 2 to May 7 in 1938. He appeared in six innings, giving up three hits and one run and had a 1.50 ERA, with no decisions, and this was the extent of his major league Career.

Woody spent the remainder of his seven seasons in the minors with seven teams in six leagues and had four double-digit winning seasons. His first came in 1935 in a combined year with the Zanesville Greys of the class C Middle Atlantic League (7-2) and the New Orleans Pelicans of the class A Southern Association (4-2) for a total record of 11-4 with a 3.77 ERA.

In 1936 Davis went 17-3 with a league-leading 1.87 ERA for the Cordele Reds of the class D Georgia-Florida League and in 1937 he won 13 times for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League. He also picked up 12 wins for the Jacksonville Tars of the South Atlantic League in 1939.

Woody tailed off in 1940 and decided to call it a career at age 27. He had compiled a minor league record of 67-58 while appearing in 190 games and pitching 1,058 innings.

After baseball, Woody enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to his native Georgia where he worked and lived until his death on July 18, 1999 in Jesup, GA. He was 86 years old.
