Outfielder J.C. Dunn led the North Atlantic League in 1949 with 141 runs, 216 hits, 137 RBI, and a .384 average. Dunn later led the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League with 26 home runs in 1954. He routinely topped .300 in the low minors and hit 20 or more homers three times; he fives, he drove in 100 or more runs in a season. Dunn only hit .120 in AAA and .188 in AA, spending his time in the lower rungs of the farm systems.
On August 8, 1957, a hotel porter sitting behind the Ardmore dugout in Ponca City pulled out a gun and shot five shots at Ardmore outfielder Coy Smith. Dunn, running to the dugout after scoring a run, was hit in the leg and the chest. Mike Ryba was brought in August 11 to run the club, but Dunn was back in the lineup on August 27.
As a manager, Dunn led his teams to the league finals in his last five seasons, wining three playoff championships. His 1957 Ardmore team was caught down the stretch in the regular season by the Paris Orioles and finished second. However the team swept through the playoffs 3-0 over the Muskogee Giants and 4-0 over Paris.
