The club then negotiated a player development contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and returned home July 1, changing their name to the Hannibal Cardinals. The team maintained their affiliation with St. Louis through 1954. In 1954, J.C. Dunn established himself as the most dominant hiter ever to play in Hannibal. That year Dunn set the franchise records for home runs (26), batting average (.332), and runs batted in (103). Following that season, St. Louis terminated their affiliation with the team.
