Hannibal Citizens

From BR Bullpen

The Hannibal Citizens were an independent Minor League team playing within the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League. The Citizens were a relatively unpopular team and went bankrupt before the end of the summer of 1955, the Citizens' only season. The Citizens were the third incarnation of MOV teams playing their home games at Clemens Field in Hannibal, MO. Previous incarnations of the franchise were named the Hannibal Stags and the Hannibal Cardinals, the Cardinals being the only MLB affiliated incarnation of the franchise. During the bankruptcy proceedings, the press in Hannibal dubbed the team the Hannibal Pepsis. Following the 1955 season, the franchise was purchased and relocated to Michigan City, IN where they joined the Midwest League as the Michigan City White Caps. Despite the team's shortcomings and minimal fanbase, the Citizens were the most popular of the Hannibal franchises, attracting 40,977 fans in 1955.

Clyde Gisclair led the team in average (.323) and tied for the home run lead (13). Ron Hagler (17-15, 4.46) somehow managed a winning record for the .333 team as the clear ace. On August 9, Ric Lessmann threw the only no-hitter in the history of Hannibal baseball, defeating the Lafayette Chiefs 1-0 in seven innings.
