Biographical Information

Outfielder Le Grant Scott lettered in baseball at the University of Alabama in 1933 and 1934 and was signed by the Birmingham Barons of the Southern Association at the end of the school year in 1934. He spent the next five seasons (1934-1938) with the Barons, hitting over the .300 mark in three of the five years, before being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1938 Rule V Draft. He was also a part-time pitcher with the Barons, appearing in 28 games over his first two seasons.

Scott spent his only season in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies, making his debut on April 19, 1939 and appearing in 76 games and hitting at a .280 clip. He was then sent down to the Indianapolis Indians of the American Association, where he finished out the remainder of the year, appearing in 21 games and hitting for a .315 average.

Scott spent the rest of his pro baseball days in the minors with Indianapolis, Toronto, Rochester, Nashville and Atlanta and spent his last three seasons (1946-1948) as a player-manager in the class D Georgia-Florida League. His minor league career shows he appeared in 1,175 games, hit at a .313 average with 66 home runs. He also did some spot pitching, winding up with a 6-7 record and a 4.30 ERA, in four different seasons on the mound.

Le Grant Edward Scott died on November 12, 1993 in Birmingham, AL, at the age of 83.
