Biographical Information

In 1952 Mario Cuomo was the center fielder for the Brunswick Pirates of the Georgia-Florida League. A fine defensive player, Cuomo was known for his aggressive play. He injured his wrist while chasing a fly ball into the fence; he had been hitting .353 before the injury but slipped to .244 by year's end (the Georgia-Florida was a pitcher-friendly league at that point; .353 would have led the league and .244 with 55 walks in 81 games was certainly adequate for a good-fielding CF). Late in the year, Cuomo was badly injured by a pitch and spent two weeks in the hospital. He decided to finish his law degree instead, then went into politics, serving three terms as governor of New York, from the start of 1983 until the end of 1994. He delivered the keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National Convention and was repeatedly mentioned as a presidential candidate, but never decided to run. He was also offered various opportunities to serve as a member of Cabinet or on the Supreme Court, but turned these down as well, because the only job he ever wanted was to be the governor of his home state. Cuomo was known as a very gifted orator; in fact, as his obituary stated: "To say he was a powerful speaker would be an understatement."

His son, Andrew Cuomo, also became governor of New York.
