Biographical Information

Charlie Letchas was an infielder for 18 years (1935-1953), four in the Major Leagues (1939;1941;1944;1946) and 16 in the minors (1935-1943;1947-1956), losing one year to the military. He served one year in the United States Armed Forces during World War II (1945) (N&C). He was born on Sunday, 3 October 1915, in Thomasville, GA. Letchas was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on 16 September 1939, with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played with the Phillies (1939;1944-1946) and the Washington Senators (1941) and hit 34 homeruns in the minors. On 23 June 1944, Letchas had two hits, the only hits off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ed Head who tossed a two-hitter against the Phillies. Later he worked at Southwestern State Hospital. He died at age 79 at Town 'n Country Hospital in Tampa, FL and is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, GA.
