Fitzgerald Orioles

From BR Bullpen

The Fitzgerald Orioles were members of the 1957 Georgia-Florida League. The Baltimore Orioles affiliate was 37-33-1 in the first half (4th of 6 teams) and 28-41 (6th) in the second half. Overall they had the 4th-best mark in the Georgia-Florida that season. They drew the fewest fans in the circuit (18,046, 7,000 fewer than the next club) and no team since has been placed in Fitzgerald, GA. Pitcher Kedy Curl was the team's ace (15-9, 2.51). The manager was 26-year-old second baseman Earl Weaver, who hit .288/~.456/.398 and drew 100 walks in 112 games. It would be 29 years later till another Weaver-led club finished under .500, after over 2,000 games managed in the majors. It was Weaver's first full season leading a team - he had been a part-time manager and player for the Knoxville Smokies a year earlier. It also was Weaver's first season in the Orioles organization. He cost the club just $3,500, well worth it given the long-term success he had in the majors.
