1966 Rule V Draft

The major league 1966 Rule V Draft was held November 28, while the minor league phase was held later the same day in Columbus, OH. 76 players total were drafted by the major and minor league clubs. 23 players were drafted by major league teams at a cost of $422,000, while minor league teams selected 53 players.
The 23 players selected by major league clubs was the same as the previous year, however 9 of the players were selected under the first-year rule as opposed to 6 in 1965. The first pick was Joe Campbell. Pitcher Ted Abernathy was selected, after having set a major league record with 84 appearances in 1965.
In the minor league draft, 37 picks were regular selections, while 16 were of the first-year variety. 3 players were drafted from the Mexican League, the first time players had been drafted from south of the border. Regular picks were $12,000 for AAA selections and $4,000 for AA selections. First year picks were $8,000 for all classifications.
