Biographical Information

Alonzo "Candy" Harris appeared in six games for the Houston Astros at the start of the 1967 season. Not yet 20, he was one of the youngest players in the National League at the time. Five of his appearances were as a pinch-runner, and one as a pinch-hitter, when he struck out against Mel Queen of the Cincinnati Reds. This was the penultimate season during which major league teams were allowed to carry a few extra players on their roster at the start of the season, with the cut-off date being at the end of April.

Harris was born in Selma, AL and attended high school in Los Angeles, CA. He was signed in 1966 as an amateur free agent by the Baltimore Orioles, and split his minor league time in 1966 between three teams, hitting an overall .287 with 43 stolen bases, but most of his playing time was in Rookie ball and low Class A. He was an outfielder in the minor leagues. The Astros picked him up in the 1966 Rule V draft, and he did not play again in 1967 after his few big league appearances in April of that year. He then played in the Astros' system from 1968 to 1971, staying in Class A until reaching AA with the Columbus Astros of the Dixie Association in 1971. He played one final season with the Bakersfield Dodgers, a Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 1972 before calling it quits.
