1958 Rule V Draft
The major league 1958 Rule V Draft was held December 1, while the minor league phase was held December 2 in Washington, DC. Only 30 players total were drafted by the major and minor league clubs. 12 players were drafted by major league teams at a cost of $300,000, while minor league teams selected a mere 18 players (a post WWII low) at a cost of $84,500.
The 1958 draft was the first which called for unrestricted selection of players with four years of O.B. experience. It was also the first under which draft prices increased. All major league selections cost $25,000 as opposed to the previous sliding scale of $15,000 for selections from AAA down to $2,000 for players from D leagues. Despite the raise, the 12 players selected was the highest since 1954. Johnny O'Brien was the first pick of the major league portion of the draft.
In the minor league portion, the draft prices were set at $12,000 for AAA clubs, $7,500 for AA clubs, $4,000 for A clubs, $2,000 for B clubs, and $1,000 for C clubs.
