1961 Rule V Draft

From BR Bullpen

The major league 1961 Rule V Draft was held November 27, while the minor league phase was held later the same day, both in Tampa, FL. 61 players total were drafted by the major and minor league clubs. 35 players were drafted by major league teams (the largest draft in 47 years) at a cost of $680,000 (a record amount), while minor league teams selected 26 players at a cost of $192,500.

Following the regular draft, the first-year selections were made, followed by 4 more players taken in a special drawing by the new Houston Colt 45s and New York Mets. 15 of the players taken by major league teams were selected under the first-year rule, including the Chicago White Sox selection of Steven Selsky, a Los Angeles Dodgers youngster who had yet to make his O.B. debut. He was one of seven Dodger players declared draft eligible by Ford Frick for playing on a Dodger-sponsored rookie team.

The first pick in the major league portion of the draft was Ken Hamlin.
