Charleston Marlins

From BR Bullpen

In 1961 the International League tried to expand to Puerto Rico but the San Juan Marlins were not a viable club. The team moved to Charleston, WV where they kept the Marlin name - while there were no Marlins swimming in the mountains, many people were using Marlin rifles. Ray Washburn went 16-9 with a 2.34 ERA to lead a strong club, though the most famous position players (Tim McCarver, Dal Maxvill and George Crowe) all struggled at the plate, Fred Whitfield carrying the offensive load instead. The team only played one season. Ten years later the IL would return to the city with the Charleston Charlies.
