2021 Rule V Draft
The 2021 Rule V Draft was scheduled to be held on December 8th. Due to the major league lockout which began on December 2nd, the major league portion of the draft was suspended indefinitely and then officially cancelled in early March.
The minor league portion was still scheduled to procede. However, because teams did not attend the Winter Meetings, the draft was held via teleconference. The absence of the major league portion affected the minor league draft, as AAA teams did not lose any players via the major league portion, thus not freeing up any roster spots to draft anyone. Additionally, players who were drafted in the minor league portion could then still have been eligible to be drafted in the major league portion of the draft, if that had been held at a later date, although this was not the case in the end.
