Biographical Information[edit]

The Arizona Diamondbacks picked John Duplantier in the 3rd round of the 2016 amateur draft, out of the University of Houston. The big pitcher pitched only 1 inning for the Hillsboro Hops of the Northwest League that season. In 2017, he began the year with the Kane County Cougars of the Midwest League, going 6-1, 1.24 in 13 games, That strong start earned him a trip to the 2017 Futures Game, where he was on the U.S. team. He then finished the season in the California League with the Visalia Rawhide and continued to overwhelm hitters, finishing the year with a combined pitching line of 12-3, 1.39. He struck out 165 batters in 136 innings.

In 2018, he was set back by arm injuries as he made just 14 starts for the Jackson Generals of the Southern League. He was 5-1, 2.69, with 68 Ks in 67 innings, and also made a couple of appearances with the AZL Diamondbacks on a rehabilitation assignment. After the season, he pitched in the Arizona Fall League. In 2019, he did not make the major league team out of spring training, but did not have to wait long to get his shot, as he was called up on April 1st to help out a tired bullpen, and made his debut that same day against the San Diego Padres, in relief of Merrill Kelly who had also made his debut in that game. He allowed just one hit in 3 innings, striking out 2 ans walking none to be credited with a save in Arizona's 10-3 win. He ended his rookie season with 15 appearances, including 3 starts, with a record of 1-1, 4.42. In the minors, he pitched 13 times for the AAA Reno Aces, going 1-2, 5.21, and also made rehab appearances with the AZL Diamondbacks and with Visalia.
