Players who went here

Lance Berkman, Pete Runnels and Jose Cruz are three prominent major league players who went to Rice University.

Rice Pitchers Philip Humber, Jeffrey Niemann, and Wade Townsend were all selected in the first eight picks of the 2004 amateur draft. All three suffered arm injuries within three years.

In a bizarre development, Rice University was the owner of Yankee Stadium for a spell. This happened in 1962 when John Cox, who was a 1927 Rice graduate and had become the owner of the Yankee Stadium Corporation in 1955, turned over the shares to his alma mater as an income-generating grant. So Rice, owned the building, although the Knights of Columbus owned the land on which it was built, to make the arrangement even stranger. The stadium was not properly maintained during that period - not too surprisingly - and in 1971 it was bought by the City of New York through eminent domain, and given a thorough restoration in 1974 and 1975.
