Biographical Information[edit]

The son of scout and college coach Kyle Van Hook, Clay Van Hook has been a college coach.

Clay was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 43rd round of the 2003 amateur draft out of high school (three picks before Max Scherzer) but did not sign. After a year at Navarro College, he hit .266/.407/.294 as a sophomore at the University of Texas. The school won the 2005 College World Series. He fell to .244/.382/.289 in 2006 and was 4 for 17 with four walks as a senior. The Seattle Mariners chose him in the 45th round of the 2007 amateur draft; he did not sign.

Van Hook then went into coaching. He was a student-coach at Texas in 2008, then was an assistant at McNeese State University (2009-2011), Rice University (2012- ), and University of Oklahoma (2018-2022). He was then hired as head coach at University of Texas at Arlington for 2023. He moved to the University of Houston as recruiting coordinator in 2025.
