Biographical Information[edit]
Jess Neely was a college coach.
Neely hit .271/?/.339 in 30 games for the 1925 Tupelo Wolves, fielding .962 in the outfield. He coached baseball at the University of Alabama (1929-1930), Clemson University (1932-1938) and Rice University (1945 and 1948). His players who went on the majors were Fred Sington and Whitey Hilcher. He was more notable as a football coach, a role he held for 42 years, the last 27 of them at Rice. He retired as one of the top 10 college football coaches in career wins. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
