Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Wade Townsend was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 2004 amateur draft but did not sign with the club. The next year, he was picked by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the 8th overall pick, after being scouted by Jonathan Bonifay. The move was a "signability pick", as the upper-management overruled the scouting department. Being a senior with limited bargaining power, Townsend signed for $1.5 million, approximately $700,000 under slot.

Townsend played in the Devil Rays' farm system through 2009, missing the entire 2006 season after having Tommy John surgery the previous year. He spent a final season with the independent Laredo Broncos in 2010.
