Biographical Information[edit]
Gene Bailey played five seasons in the majors. With the Brooklyn Robins in 1923, he is listed as one of the regular outfielders - in fact, Zack Wheat had the most games in left field, Bernie Neis played the most in center while Tommy Griffith was the most common right fielder. Bailey appeared at all three outfield positions and was in more total outfield games than Wheat.
He came to the majors for cups of coffee in 1917 with the Philadelphia Athletics and 1919 with the Boston Braves, but did not get significant playing time until 1920, when he had 179 plate appearances split between the National League and American League teams in Boston, the Braves and Boston Red Sox. He was a regular in 1923 and then played 18 games in 1924. Bailey was later the baseball coach at Rice University in 1929-1930, also managing in the minors each year.
