Biographical Information[edit]
After his playing career ended, Joe Sugden was a Detroit Tigers coach in 1912, at which time he was pressed into service as a player when the Tigers' players went on strike in support of Ty Cobb on May 18th; it was Joe's final playing appearance. He later coached for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1921 to 1925 and was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies staff in 1926 and 1927. He then scouted for the Cardinals from 1928 until his passing.
He umpired two National League games in 1897.
