Biographical Information

Outfielder Bernie Neis played eight seasons in the majors, accumulating almost 2,000 at-bats. While he was not usually a particularly strong hitter, he did hit .303 in 1924, a year in which the 1924 National League as a whole hit .283.

1923 was the only season in which he had 400+ at-bats.

As a rookie in 1920 he appeared in the 1920 World Series.

The New York Times of May 14, 1920 described Bernie Neis day, in honor of Bernie and featuring a brass band. When Bernie came up to bat in the third inning, "the proceedings were halted while the presentation of a purse of $800 in gold was made".

After his major league days he continued to play for years in the minors. He typically hit over .300 in the minors, with a high of .347 in 52 games with Buffalo in 1926.

He was a player-manager at Huntington in 1933.

After his playing days ended, he was a fishing guide in Florida.
