Biographical Information[edit]

Abdiel Mendoza has pitched as high as AAA and has been on the Panamanian national team.

He was signed initially by the Oakland Athletics and was 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA for the 2016 DSL Athletics in his pro debut. The next summer, he was with the Vermont Lake Monsters (2-3, 3.82 in 7 G) and Beloit Snappers (4 R in 2 1/3 IP). He opened 2018 with Vermont, going 2-3 with a 3.32 ERA, then was dealt with Teodoro Ortega to the Texas Rangers for Cory Gearrin. [1] After the deal, he finished the summer with the Hickory Crawdads (0 R in 3 IP).

Spending all of 2019 with Hickory, he was 2-2 wit h3 saves and a 3.15 ERA. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, then he had a 1-3, 4.95 record for the 2021 Down East Wood Ducks. The Toronto Blue Jays took him in the AAA portion of the 2021 Rule V Draft. [2] He was 6-2 with a save and a 2.78 ERA for the '22 Vancouver Canadians. He allowed two runs in 3 1/3 IP for the Federales de Chiriquí in the 2023 Caribbean Series. He was one of two Abdiels on the staff as they also had Abdiel Saldaña.

During 2023, he pitched for both Vancouver (1-2, Sv, 3.31 in 22 G) and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (1-1, 3.72 in 4 G). He split '24 between New Hampshire (8-12, Sv, 3.62 in 32 G) and the Buffalo Bisons (1-0, 5.06 in 3 G). He tied for 9th in the Eastern League in wins and led in losses (one ahead of Trace Bright and Michael Cuevas). He led Jays farmhands in losses, one ahead of Juaron Watts-Brown, and was two shy of the win lead.

Pitching for Panama in the 2024 Premier 12, he made two appearances. Against the Netherlands, he relieved Alberto Guerrero in the 7th with a 7-6 lead, one out and a man on second. He retired Hendrik Clementina on a grounder that moved Jonathan Schoop to third then threw a wild pitch to tie it before retiring Sharlon Schoop. In the 8th, he allowed a Eugene Helder single then Denzel Richardson and Dwayne Kemp grounded PR Delano Selassa over. Ray-Patrick Didder singled to put the Dutch ahead, then Mendoza got Didi Gregorius. Panama tied it back up before Alberto Baldonado replaced Mendoza, but they could not hold on. He got the win over Mexico's Jesús Cruz. Taking over for Steven Fuentes with one out in the 7th, a 2-2 tie and one out, he retired Andrés Álvarez on a grounder, walked José Rojas and got Chris Carter. After Panama scored in the 8th, Miguel Gómez relieved and Baldonado would save the win for Mendoza. [3]
